Afternoon Message – Thursday 26th March 2020

Good afternoon Year 6! I hope you have had a great Thursday full of wonderful learning at home. Again, I am fully aware that some websites are still crashing because of the increased number of children accessing them all over the country! But this seems to be improving day by day. Please continue to complete the rest of your home learning in your book when you’re unable to use those websites.

I hope your writing is looking really good. Hopefully, you’ve finished it now and are ready to edit and up level tomorrow. Well done to all of you who are making a huge effort to complete your home learning, I’m really proud of you all!

What invention did you pick for D.T.? I’ve thought long and hard about this and I think during this current time, any medical equipment created has had such a significant impact on people’s lives. Things like X-rays, heart monitors and even thermometers. Where would we be without them?

Right, everyone, are you ready for… (drumroll please) Mrs Dushku’s challenges?

If you are looking for something fun to do have a go at these:

  • ‘Make this potato……’ challenge. This week, I would like you to make the picture of the potato below into your favourite Disney character. You can copy and paste the image into paint, print it off and colour over the top, use an actual potato or draw your own. Take pictures of your work and send them into me. I Can not wait to see your creations!

Morning Message – Thursday 26th March 2020

Good Morning everyone! Mrs. Dushku here! I hope you’ve all had a great night’s sleep, are well rested and have had a good breakfast ready to fuel your body and brain!

How good are Jo Wick’s workouts! I think it’s such a good way to start the day. I always find getting up and being active sets me up for the rest of the day. I’m trying to keep really active in my home so I think I might try a bit of yoga later too on YouTube (I’ve never done yoga before so this could be very interesting).

It is the fourth day of using the school website for home learning so you should be used to the layout and able to find all the information and resources you need. Thank you so much for the feedback on the layout of the website, we want this to be as easy for you to use as possible.

So, what are some of the thigs on the agenda today….

Jo Wicks work out. Get all the windows open and get some fresh air in. When you’ve completed his work out don’t forget to drink plenty of water to rehydrate yourself.

Today you should be writing the ending of your flashback narrative for Munchkin. Remember to change back into the present tense for this paragraph. Make sure you stop every 7-10 minutes or so and read aloud what you have written to check it makes sense. Also remember there are online thesauruses for you to up-level your vocabulary.

D.T. time!  Analyse how an invention or product has significantly changed or improved people's lives. There are so many incredible inventions out there it’s going to be tough to pick one! Think about how you want to present this work. Poster, non-chronological report or use ICT.

With lots of spare time It’s important to find new things to do. I am going to refresh my French language knowledge and try and learn how to French Plait. Wish me Luck!

Make sure you're keeping safe and washing your hands regularly.

As always, you can contact me with any questions or if you just want to say hi, I would love to hear from you! Use the contact form on the Year 6 main page. As well as this, if you would like to email me a picture of your work I would love to see them! You can email me at Rdushku@gascoigne.co.uk

Looking forward to seeing how you got on later. Have an incredible day!

Daily Timetable/Activities

Reading

Read for at least 20 minutes. This could be your school reading book, a home book, Bug Club or another text you enjoy. Identify any new and unknown vocabulary and find the definitions.

PE

Complete the daily Joe Wicks (The Body Coach) PE lesson.

Visit his YouTube channel here:

https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1/videos

Maths

Visit the White Rose Maths website here: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

Please complete Lesson Four (Calculating Ratio). You can watch the video first to help you, then complete the worksheet and mark it. If you are finding it difficult, re-watch the video or look for other online tutorials (Khan Academy and Mathantics are good places to start).

Writing

Continue writing your flashback narrative, based on the character of Munchkin from Floodland. Use the plan which you created on Monday. Think back to all of the flashback writing you have completed over the previous weeks and use these as a model for this piece of writing. Remember to include all the relevant language and structural features, as well as a range of sentence openers and descriptive, emotive and figurative language. Don't forget to pause regularly whilst writing to re-read and edit your writing. Before you begin writing today, read over what you have already written. This will help you to ensure there is cohesion and you may notice some errors that you didn't spot yesterday! Try to complete this piece of writing today. If you finish, you can begin proof-reading and editing your work.

SPaG

Practise your weekly spellings. Copy them into your home learning book and write their definitions.

Complete the SPaG activity below. There is a Powerpoint which you can work through to show you how to answer the questions. You can then work on the varied fluency questions. Select either 'Developing', 'Expected' or 'Greater Depth' depending on how confident you are with the topic. You can then mark your work and move onto the application and reasoning sheet.

DT (Design Technology)

Please research an invention or product that has significantly changed the lives of the human race. This could be something such as the telephone, the automobile (car) or a more modern invention such as an iPhone or an Xbox. Take notes from your research and analyse how the invention/product has significantly changed or improved people's lives.
