This week, we will be writing poems in thought of the current issues surrounding the worldwide lockdown. To end the poetry unit in a celebratory and hopeful manner, we will be writing one poem about the experience of the lockdown and the other in celebration of key workers.
Today we will plan an acrostic poem about a key worker of your choice. In an acrostic poem, the first letter of each line spells a word. The word is the subject of the poem.
For our planning, you will think of a variety of words and phrases that can describe a key worker. This will be a brainstorm – just think of as many words and phrases as you can to describe a key worker. Use a thesaurus, find new, powerful words and check their meaning. You can choose any key workers you like. Here are a few just in case you need support thinking of one: doctors, nurses, teachers, carers, police, firefighters, cleaners, paramedics, social workers, supermarket workers, bus and train drivers. There are many more.
We have included a fun way for you to brainstorm as well – just have a look at the example uploaded. In addition, at the bottom of that page, you will find a bank of descriptive words you can use. Remember, you will be making phrases, not just using words.
