Our Learning 2018-2019
During the first half term, in our Foundation subjects (Science,History, Geography, Art) we have been learning about our Solar System. We have created mnemonics to remember the order of the planets e.g. My Very Educated Mother Just Served Up Nachos. Our understanding of the Earth is also developing as we have been exploring how the Earth rotates around the Sun resulting in day and night, seasons at different times around the world. In addition to this, we have been learning about the role of Galileo Galilei and his discovery of sun spots on the Sun.
This half-term in Literacy we have been learning about life in Ancient Greece and exploring Greek Myths. Our Literacy lessons have focused on the story of 'Prometheus and Pandora.'
Our writing aim is to:
To write a new ending for Prometheus and Pandora from Pandora’s point of view.
To meet this aim, we have studied the story of of Prometheus and Pandora and understanding the actions of characters. We understand that some characters in the story are more important than others. Additionally, we have been exploring the vocabulary that the narrator has used to Zeus, Prometheus and Pandora. The focus has been on; different aspects of grammar, pronouns and nouns, expanded noun phrases, prepositional phrases, inverted commas and use of fronted adverbials so that we have a good understanding of what will be required when writing our myths.
In Year Five, we are focusing on working with 5 digit numbers. We have also been developing strategies to solve maths problems mentally. To achieve this we need to have quick recall of our number bonds and our times tables facts. In addition to this, we have been learning about parallel and perpendicular lines as well as the properties of 3D shapes. We understand the vocabulary face, edge and vertex.
In Year Five we are learning to play a musical instrument. We can take them home so that we can continue to learn how to play them. Please see my teacher for details.
We will receive our home learning every Friday. We will need to return our home learning books by the following Wednesday. Spelling homework is given on Friday and we will need to return this the following Friday.
We need to read every night. It is essential that our reading diaries are updated regularly and brought to school daily.
Our target in Year Five is to have completed 10 book reviews by half-term.We will receive a certificate when this has been achieved.
