Literacy Learning

In literacy this term we have been looking at this story :

We have produced some fantastic writing based around this story. Here are the things that we needed to focus on :

Reading Objectives:

I Can:

  1. make links between the key themes of friendship and my own experiences
  2. identify particular words and techniques Jon Blake uses to create contrasting moods
  3. think about how the description of the setting in Sand Wizards reflects the characters’ feelings.

Key writing purpose:

  • To write two descriptions of a beach setting which show contrasting moods and feelings.

Writing Evaluation:

My story:

  • uses adjectives to describe and create a happy mood and then a threatening mood
  • includes a threat which is hinted at but not fully described to create suspense

  • uses adverbs and adverbials of time to show when things happen (e.g. Suddenly)
  • includes speech, which is set out and punctuated correctly

Our Writing

As part of the curriculum, children are expected to complete comprehension tasks independently. In order to ensure that our children are achieving the expected progress they will need practice these skills. Attached is a completed comprehension task that models what is expected of the children in year 3. The model along with the simple steps provided below should help you to assist your children in completing this activity as part of their home learning. You may work with your children but please be aware that during test conditions children are expected to complete all reading independently. Please let the children complete the tasks independently and then follow the steps below to check through it with them together after they have completed it.

4 step guide for comprehension:

1. Read and understand the text.

2. Read and understand the question

  • What is it asking you to do?

3. Highlight the important words in the question.

  • Think about where the answer might be.
  • Highlight text

4. Find the answer

  • Look at how many marks the question is worth to determine how much detail you will need to answer in.

5. Answer the question.

We have been focussing on number this half term. We have looked at all four operations and learnt lots of different methods to help us solve them.

Adding & Subtracting.

We can add and subtract using hundred squares , number lines and partitioning. We have used these methods to help us to solve calculations mentally.

Multiplying & Dividing

We know that when we multiply and divide we need to look at groups. We can use number lines , arrays and mental recall to help us do this.

Our Methods

Our topic this term is called 'How does your garden grow?' We will be learning all about plants.

So far we have been able to label plants and explain the functions of each part. We have also investigated leaves.

Our topic learning !

Art, History, Geography, DT & Computing.

This half term our topic is called scrumdiddlyumptious. Our aim by the end of our topic is to make our own delicious smoothies. So far we have had great fun using our senses to identify a variety of different foods. We had to guess what foods were in front of us by using our sense of touch, smell, sight and taste. Some peoples guesses changed after each sense. We have produced some amazing sketches of some of the foods that we would like to incorporate into our smoothies. We will have to design labels and packaging for our smoothies before we make them, and who knows some of them might even be good enough for the supermarkets to stock!

Home Learning!

We will receive our home learning every Friday which is due to be returned by Wednesday. The home learning will include literacy and maths learning that we have been focusing on during the week. In addition to this we will also need to practise our weekly spellings as there will be a spelling test every Friday and of course we all want to achieve top marks!

It is really important that we read our books daily as this helps us to improve our writing skills too. Once we have finished reading our books we will need to complete a high quality book review to explain what we thought about the book. The more we read the more likely we are to receive the highly sought after certificates from Ms Ferreira !We would love for year 3 to be the overall reading champions this year, so we need to keep the book reviews flowing.

Don't just stop there though, the year 3 teachers always welcome extra home learning!
